Tokyo Marble Chocolate @ Production I.G
[Review: 84/100]
Tokyo Marble Chocolate is an interesting OVA. It chronicles the life of a young couple and their love from both of their perspectives each titled Zenryoku Shounen (boy part) and Mata Aimashou (girl part).
I found Tokyo Marble Chocolate to be a really neat romance story that held my interest from beginning to end (for both parts). The characters, Chizuru and Yuudai, are some of the best I’ve seen in recent times. They’re perfect characters because they are imperfect, especially Yuudai who is afraid of heights and apparently dogs (I won’t laugh at the former but the latter…LOL). Chizuru flaws come in the form of her being indecisive and being, I think, self-esteem issues. Both of their past relationships were pretty much filled with hiccups and, to me, were quite hilarious. Yuudai had a girlfriend who kicked the asses of some thugs with extreme prejudice and Chizuru accidentally knocked out one of her former boyfriend’s mother and [drunkenly] beat the hell out of another at a restaurant. That last one was especially hilarious to me because it started out as light hitting, then light slapping, and then full on wailing! Obviously, she’s not someone you want drunk.

Yeah, I’m late on my thoughts on the movie but does it really matter? Of course not, since I’m going to jump to my main points. I’ve anticipated this film ever since it was first announced and now that I’ve finally seen it I’m blown away. Sure, it is a retelling of the first few episodes of the first season but it largely improves on those episodes with magnificent theatre-quality animation, the return of the superb soundtrack and an excellent movie theme/insert song by the lovely Kawada Mami and ED theme by Love Planet Five. There are a few things that are different though the main one is the ending which has Alastor with a larger role than before, basically laying the smackdown on Friagne in epic proportions. I think I watched this at the right time as well since Shana Second, so far, hasn’t been as exciting or epic as this movie is all-around. I can only hope that the second season starts to have a similar pace as well as a battle as intense as Shana and Margery vs. Friagne.

Finally, the DVD of Bleach: Memories of Nobody arrived along with the subsequent fansubs. It took me a while to watch this not because I didn’t want to but because of delays and such. That aside, this movie really touched me when it was all said and done. So I’ll try to talk about everything I felt during and after watching it and weave together my impressions.

Hmm. What can I say for the opening of this entry? Well, the first thing would be: WATCH THIS MOVIE NOW! It took me a while to watch this wonderful film because of real life issues and time constraints and now that I’ve finally sat down and viewed it I can honestly say that this is one of the best animated movies I’ve laid my eyes on (and I’ve seen a lot). It really does deserve all of the awards and nominations that it received since it was released. The film is a wonderful package of comedy and drama which really should not be missed!

This was my first time seeing such a wonderful feature length animation movie since Spirited Away. I could really relate to this movie and was blown away by its great concept and the way it grasps the audience into it. Speaking of Spirited Away, I guess you could say this was quite similar to it. No, it’s not a Miyazaki film, but it’s from a certain someone known as Satoshi Kon. I dunno about the rest of you, but I never actually heard of him until this movie. Maybe I caught a few instances of his other great works like Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress or Perfect Blue, heck I didn’t know the guy was responsible for the mysterious Paranoia Agent. The high responses intrigued me to see it. Well, other than the fact that my sister wanted to see it, and I would not have any thought of it if she hadn’t asked. But that’s besides the point. Anywho, a synopsis of the movie first.
6 comments28-year old, Dr. Atsuko Chiba is an attractive but modest Japanese research psychotherapist whose work is on the cutting edge of her field. Her alter-ego is a stunning and fearless 18-year old “dream detective,” code named PAPRIKA, who can enter into people’s dreams and synchronize with their unconscious to help uncover the source of their anxiety or neurosis.
At Atsuko’s lab, a powerful new psychotherapy device known as the “DC-MINI” has been invented by her brilliant colleague, Dr. Tokita, a nerdy genius who is rather too fond of his food. Although this state-of-the-art device could revolutionize the world of psychotherapy, in the wrong hands the potential misuse of the device could be devastating, allowing the user to completely annihilate the dreamer’s personality while they are asleep.
When one of the only four existing DC-MINI prototypes is stolen in the finals stages of research, and simultaneously Dr. Tokita’s research assistant, Himuro, goes missing, Atsuko suspects it’s not a coinidence. Several of the remaning researchers at the lab start to go mad, dreaming while in their waking staets, haunted by a Japanese doll which featured heavily in the dreams of one of Himuro’s schizophrenic patients. Atsuko now knows for certain that the DC-MINI is being used to destroy people’s minds. She fears that not only will the government refuse to sanction the use of the machine for psychotherapy purposes when it becomes public, but whoever is manipulating the machines has a more evil purpose in mind.
