So I was over at k-manga getting the newest Unbalance x Unbalance chapters when I happened to see a small preview pic of a manwha called The Breaker. The artwork (and the pretty girls in bikinis) caught my eye so I decided to give it a shot. It was only up to chapter 11 so I figured there wasn’t much to lose if I didn’t like it. Honestly I had no idea what to expect since the title doesn’t really give any info. A couple pages in and the first thing that came to mind was: Korean GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka)?

Enjoying the best of high school life.

The story in the beginning is basically this: Shiwoo has a pretty crappy life. Everyday he gets bullied by some assholes, in turn he looks like a loser to his idol-level hawt childhood friend, and at home his mom is too busy with work to even notice. Then one day, the new homeroom teacher Han Chunwoo meets Shiwoo after just getting bullied as usual. Shiwoo at first sees Chunwoo as nothing more than a weird, carefree guy who doesn’t fit the image of a teacher at all. But later that night, by chance Shiwoo witnesses the unbelievable: his homeroom teacher kicking some ass. Soon after, Shiwoo begs his new homeroom teacher to teach him how to fight. This is the start of the drastic change in life Shiwoo so desperately wanted.

I didn’t think it was possible to make that shirt look badass. Bravo.

The art work is really something. It looks great, it’s detailed, and it feels mature. It also manages to balance both the serious and wacky stuff as seen in the above images. Like I said, this is pretty GTO-esque in the beginning. In my opinion, this is more of an homage than a rip-off because it soon develops it’s own unique plot that’s more martial art/gang oriented. Plus some aspects of it are too damn obvious to be a rip-off. If you’ve read GTO (which you should if you haven’t), you’ll immediately know what I mean when you read.

If this pic isn’t enough to convince you to try this, I don’t know what can.

This is a manwha, meaning it’s Korean not Japanese. As you can see the names are very different compared to something you would see in a manga. But don’t let that turn you off. Sure it will get pretty confusing at first, but it’s something you can get used to. Though it’s a manwha, you’ll still be reading from right to left unlike the usual left to right. Well I’ll just stop rambling and let you see for yourself what the hell I’m talking about. You can get the first 11 chapters scanlated here.

Feel free to comment on what you thought~

I read the first two chapters a while back, and I seriously couldn’t like it.
Like you, the first thought on my mind was “GTO”, but the worst was i just couldn’t like the characters.
    I gave up on it.
And it’s not because of it being korean, because I already read a lot of those.
It just didn’t pull me in at all.

Which characters specifically? The main two characters are very similar to Onizuka and Noboru. Are you saying you didn’t like GTO?
