Kannagi ep. 6

[ Episode 6: Nagi-tan's Heart-beating Craziness ]
![]()
SUMMARY
After a bit of a misunderstanding via the phone, Tsugumi ends up taking Nagi shopping for clothes, undergarments, shoes, bags, etc. all with just 10,000 measly yen (this is shopping we’re talking about). Nagi depresses after trying out a C-size bra only to find that she’s relatively flat. Intimidated by a much younger girl having much larger breasts than her, Nagi promptly buys a D-cup. In the morning while Jin brushes his teeth, Nagi greets him only to leave him startled seeing Nagi’s blown-up chest size thanks to the bra.

Takako urges to go to Maidia, a new maid cafe, to see some cute girls in cute frills and drags the Art Club members along. Little do they, and even Jin, know that Nagi is working their part-time, and it just so happens that Tsugumi is there filling in for her sick friend. Tension ensues as well as embarrassment with the girls at the cafe, serving tables and taking pics with other customers while Jin is there. Jin further ups the embarrassment for him and Nagi when Nagi asks if Jin was mad at her for getting a job without telling him, though Jin shouts out that it’s only because she’s in cute clothing and being so close to him makes him uneasy. The silence dies into laughter.
Jin walks home alone but Nagi quickly catches up to him after her part-time is done for the day. Nagi explains herself to Jin about why she took a part-time job: so she didn’t have to be a burden to Jin, earning her own money, gathering devotees… but Jin merely states he just didn’t like it when she took pics with the other customers, in which Nagi proudly replies back, saying she’ll quit.
At Maidia, Zange is the newcomer but is frustrated after hearing Nagi quit, leaving her with no point to working at the cafe, but the manager won’t take no for an answer as she’s now forced to stay.

REVIEW
Herein lies the biggest fanservice episode thus far. Six episodes in and there’s still more things coming at us with swift speed. The first thing to take note of is the breaking of the fourth wall by Tsugumi, mentioning the viewers of the show (amusingly enough, a little image of a fangirl watching the very same episode on what looks like WMP 10). Shino also makes a bit of note about the manga editor of the series as well, with Takako telling her to save that kind of mentioning for DVD commentary. Classy.
The first segment with the shopping was a real appetizer. I laughed hard at Nagi’s 「うあああああああ」 (uaaaaaaa) after she found out how flat she is. The chemistry between Tsugumi and Nagi is just astounding when Tsugumi unintentionally taunts Nagi, trying to be modest and helping out, but I think it only teased Nagi real bad (but it was hilariously good!). I noticed the well-endowed middle schooler was voiced by Fukuhara Kaori (Tsukasa, Lucky☆Star) after hearing that cute 「でも・・・」 of hers. Speaking of Tsugumi, I really, really loved seeing her tsundere side. Perhaps it was unintentional as well, but it was pure awesome and a treat. You could say the entire second segment was one big treat, or the main dish, or the dessert, or a little bit of all of that.

It was great seeing the Art Club again, and this time the members sported casual ware, always something nice to see in anime centered around schoolkids. Akiba’s fujoshi joke went off and so did my lungs. It’s funny that Takako didn’t get the joke, but from any viewer’s point of view, she obviously does look like a fujoshi. Although she does show obsession over girls and their maid costumes too, even shouting at moé like a crazed otaku. Daitetsu’s reaction was priceless. From start to finish, he just had that OMG sort of face, jaw dropped, eyes hidden, and speechless all the same. Looks like his first experience with a maid cafe was more than he could possibly imagine. As always, Shino was totally calm and enjoyed her time. I love her choice of casual clothing as well.
The manager of Maidia looked like a typical rich Sebastian more than a maid cafe manager, but I laughed when he suddenly transformed into a Hulk once Zange wanted to leave. Poor Zange, but she can definitely appeal to the cafe with her presence too. Heck, did anyone catch that PureHeart poster? Clearly, the characters on the poster are imitations of the Kannagi heroines. Nagi, Tsugumi, Zange, as well as another character yet to be seen yet, but they are all wearing the same uniform as their respective counterpart’s on the poster.

The relationship between Nagi and Jin looks to be building up a lot. The sunset scene with the two of them was really cute. Nagi sounds a lot more respectful towards Jin now and it looks like Jin’s developing an attachment towards her as well. Something must be arising from all this because both turned the reddest of any persons I’ve ever seen. I do feel really bad for Tsugumi though. She was working at Maidia as well, but Jin payed a lot more attention to Nagi. Guess you can’t really blame him, but at least take more notice of her, Too pure-pure boy! He sure made a scene though; a hilarious one, at that. Like Daitetsu said, he couldn’t help it. Still, that uproar hit Tsugumi pretty hard, I think, and that might discourage her a lot. She was already in what looked like despair after finding out Jin only called her to go shopping with Nagi. I don’t blame her for thinking that either since Jin was pretty much talking about it vaguely on the phone.
The way things are looking, both Tsugumi and Zange are pretty much losing to Nagi in the popularity department, so what can they do? The girls got to do their best to intensify the competition. FAITO!
The end card for this episode is from Naruko Hanaharu, well-known for his Kamichu! manga and most recently, his Shoujo Material eromanga. The most raunchy end card yet, but like the episode itself, does the job of delivering fanservice. I’m really loving these end cards because you never know which famous artist is next. Til next time!
