Kannagi ep. 4

[ Episode 4: Sisters ]

BAKA UNKO!!!!

SUMMARY

As Nagi tries to find a way to get her groove back, new idol Zange-chan is making her scene to the people as the new idol. It doesn’t help that Zange is Nagi’s little sister either, as Zange’s motive is to take the spotlight for herself. When Jin walks back home he stumbles upon goons harassing Zange and gets rid of them with own interesting method. Later, the two share a somewhat surreal conversation for a brief moment.

The next day while Nagi and Jin are in meal time, they spot Zange on TV, leaving Nagi in disarray. She reveals that Zange is her little sister and goes on to explain the background behind themselves. They find that Zange’s sacred tree is still intact which means Zange’s vessel is not from a carving of a human figure or anything. Nagi’s search for Zange but it’s in vain until they conveniently meet at school. They talk privately in the gym storage room but things started to get real sticky. Well almost. So Nagi learns that Zange took control over a human vessel after all, which explains why her tree is still intact. At meal time, Tsugumi pops out of nowhere and reacts at Nagi’s and Jin’s bad choice of eating their bread with certain flavor. The doorbell rings and Zange appears at the front door, saying she’ll be staying at Jin’s thanks to his help. Well ain’t that a trip. This just turned into another visual novel, didn’t it?

This week’s ED presents a beautiful artwork done by none other than acclaimed Key illustrator Hitaru Inoue. Her unique style is a blessing as always, but with Nagi, it’s just all that more blessing. So far, it’s my favorite ED art, followed by last week’s art from okama, one of my top favorite artists.

REVIEW

Another solid episode, though not as enticing as the first episode. Zange-chan is a cute one, but why are the cute ones always so devious? The word “zange” means confession, so it’s most likely another punny name, though I’m not sure if that’s even her real name. Why does she want to get rid of Nagi that much though. From the looks of things, she’s ahead of Nagi in number of devotees, but taking her sister out of the picture is going overboard, isn’t it? Her role as seducer sure helps her out in the long run too; you’d think 100 yen is too generous of her.

I like how Nagi brought up idols like being objects of worship. That’s pretty much true, and cutting to a fantasy of Nagi performing in front of thousands of people was a nice treat, especially it being just like in the OP sequence save for Nagi in a totally more daring yet angelic outfit. She may show off her wise side but it’s so funny when she gets stirred up. I freakin’ laughed when she swore at Jin, calling him a piece of shit. Even after that, she still has it in her when she tells Jin off, telling him to go back to the planet of tits.

Akiba really defines the original meaning of “otaku” with his considerably huge knowledge and depth of the idol business. Most of what he said is true too. I knew most things like seiyuu idols, singers as idols, etc. but there were much more categories than I would’ve imagined. He’s a huge motormouth though, but it’s his niche and I find it effectively funny. While he went on, I notice a website was displayed with links to Kannagi releases like the LE DVD vol. 1 and the OP single. Not sure which site, but I’ve seen one just like it.

Jin never ceases to amaze me. Not only can he dodge punches, but he can layeth the smacketh down with cans. The funniest thing I notice is that Jin is always covered with a band-aid somewhere on his face. Finding Nagi and Zange in an S&M-like situation was probably traumatic to him, but I just couldn’t help but laugh. Come on, he had a bunch of hula hoops around him too; you can’t help but laugh at this predicament.
