Lucky☆Star ep. 20

[ Episode 20: Ways for Spending Summer ]
Nanjakoryaa?!
Now here’s a very amusing start. Konata is at the store trying to buy those random figure boxes. Being a collector of sorts, random boxes are the biggest gambles you’d take because you don’t know what you’re gonna get unless you “cheat.” It reminds me of my friend who always does that whenever he wants a certain figure out of a set. But man, those random box figures KILL YOU. So you gotta know how to “cheat” and you’ll end up getting what you want. That also explains why all the good ones are taken, because everyone’s done it. The system sucks. That’s why it’s better to buy them off display cases or something. Guaranteed win there.
Bugs also attract Konata’s attention to, as we see her and her family eating while there are bugs flying around and sucking away their blood. It’s pretty common to have flies in your house every now and then, and it’s gross and troublesome how you have to kill them every time or else the buzz will just annoy the hell out of you. I wonder if Soujirou’s method holds true though. It certainly looks effective… effectively hilarious, especially once he made that comment to the fly.

While Konata freely plays dating sims, Kagami asks the many quirks about cliché backgrounds of the heroines. The girls are quite popular, they’re well-mannered, and they’re still single? Why is that? Well for one, it wouldn’t be as interesting, and second, that’s pretty much the whole point of dating sims. You don’t want to go for one who’s already taken. After this, I am really creeped out by hearing Kujira’s voice everywhere now. Later on in the day, the two talk over the phone about how they can’t stop after watching something even though they say “just one more” and all. Totally can understand where they’re coming from. Reading manga volumes, marathoning anime, or even more rounds in a game, you just can’t stop.
Tsukasa knows just what to say to leave a good impression for everyone. Saying “I think you’re cooler now!” to her dad after helping out with her homework when she was little was priceless. Kagami’s right though, normally a parent would be insulted by such a comment.
KyoAni pulls a fast one on the Haruhi fans as they once again, make really big teasers for the series. Now it’s a freakin’ beverage commercial and Haruhi suddenly gained too letter sizes.

Once again Kagami brings people back to reality with her amazing logic, crushing Misao with the hopes of excelling at certain educational standards. Exaggeration and creation are what makes fictional story school settings more lax due to the compelling and unique characters. No one care escape to their care-free dream environment when Kagami rains down upon them with the reality check attack. The harshness strikes again when Yutaka asks for advice about her friend and the boyfriend. None of the girls have any experience, of course, so they feel a big letdown in themselves. BTW, Kagami’s actually heard of Densha Otoko. I wonder if that means she watched the drama or the movie?
The last bit of the episode focuses on the girls and the festival where they watch some fireworks spectacular. The third-years and the first-years now find out that Miyuki and Minami are neighbors across the street, so they all go together in one package.
While watching the fireworks, Tsukasa and Konata have the funniest comment I’ve heard ever. Konata wondered as a kid if the fireworks were also round when looking at it from the side, in which case Tsukasa responds asking if they really weren’t flat then. Kagami’s reaction totally says it all. It was a nice way to wrap up the episode, even with the bites, but at least they all had a fun time in the end.
With Shiraishi on his little trek, the special guest taking over is none other than Ono Daisuke, seiyuu of Itsuki, a member of the SOS-dan. Though it was a really short Lucky Channel. Wonder how Shiriashi is doing. While that Shiraishi is getting some Fuji water, the real Shiraishi is out with a wig and cheerleading with Kaori performing more and looking more ridiculous.
