Kita ze Inbou! - キタぜ陰謀!

Soul Eater ep. 3

[ Episode 3: Becoming A Flawless Boy - Death the Kid`s Mission of Splendor? ]

Because stripes on your hair is not a fashion statement

Death the Kid is by the far the most likable emo character in an anime. How is this possible? Just because of his major OCD issues with symmetry. He even chose Liz and Patty just because in their weapon form the two look alike, but when they revert into humans they are complete different when it comes to height, shorts and even the bust size (which ironically the younger Patty is more well endowed).

Kid is considered to be the most talented technician in the academy, as expected from the son of the great Shimigami-sama himself. It’s interesting to see his contrast to Black Star as this time the technician is competent whereas the weapons are not as. Despite his stature, what stands between him and perfection is his problem. He even left Liz and Patty by themselves in the middle of a dark pyramid just to check if the picture on his mantle is straight, not to mention his inability to attack the pyramid because of its symmetry! I have to give it to the Soul Eater team, when they want to make the humor exaggerated, they sure succeed, not to mention it makes sense and it isn’t just thrown together.

The animation was great as usual, but the CG scene in the cave was unnecessary. A show as visually spectacular as Soul Eater doesn’t need CG to wow anyone, and it was cheap as pretty much any anime who uses CG (besides Macross Frontier which I can let slide). It is a little ironic that a comedic character like Black Star got a serious battle with excellent animation and a serious character like Death the Kid gets a battle that starts seriously but turns out as a joke at the end. Not that it’s bad, but it wasn’t as great as the last two episodes. That being said, it was funnier than the last episode mainly thanks to Mamoru Miyano’s ability to convey not only the snobby side of the character, but the goofy whiny side as well as he gets insulted by Liz on his stripes. I am not a big fan of Miyano’s Light or Setsuna, but I consider his Death the Kid to be his best role to date, THUS FAR.

Out of the three prologues I liked Maka and Soul’s the most. Despite the initial awe, it had the perfect blend of action and comedy without tiring the viewer. Black Star and Death the Kid were great as well, don’t get me wrong, but their dynamic don’t feel as fresh as Maka and Soul. For one no one can expect a punk like Soul to be a pianist and Maka to be more tomboyish than a regular girl. Once you saw Death the Kid or Black Star’s quirks, you already know what they are about and the mystery ends. I just hope there more to them and now that the prologue is over, I am looking forward to the main story.

9/10

This much is obvious: Death the Kid is AWESOME. Liz and Patty are the funniest Weapons in the series and Liz is easily the sexiest character introduced so far apart from Blair. I also find the fact that they’re guns to be pretty damn sweet. Kid’s obsession with everything symmetrical is friggin’ golden and I found myself laughing all throughout the episode thanks to his OCD episodes of having everything be symmetrical even though his own hair isn’t symmetrical! I find it interesting that he’s Shinigami-sama’s son though. I didn’t expect that. I mean, how the hell did that happen LOL? Who’s his mother and will we ever see her? I’m thinking we probably won’t since both parents are rarely shown in series/stories like this. Also, from the looks of things it seems as if Maka, Soul, Black Star, and Tsubaki don’t know Kid as of yet so it’ll be nice to see how all of them will interact with each other once they’re together. I’m guessing that Kid will be the veteran of the group seeing as he apparently has a lot of experience and has two hot chicks Weapon girls at his side.

Well, I’m glad that the prologue has ended because now the real story begins! I have no idea what to expect in that regard and I’m holding off on the manga for as long as I can so that I can enjoy everything to the fullest without having to compare the two mediums.

KID’S TURN IS FINALLY HERE! Now this guy is good stuff. I never thought of seeing a character with a symmetry obsession. It’s pretty funny when you think about it. Personally speaking, nothing can truly be symmetrical but in this sense, there is at least this much that it would make the son of a shinigami nuts over.

I found it rather funny and unbelievable just how huge that obsession is though. He went so far as to leave his weapons just to check his house! You should never leave your guns behind, Kid. His love is so strong, he couldn’t possibly leave that out of his head. Of course, he was sure getting owned badly until the Pharaoh demon guy turned out o be not as symmetrical as we perceived. Kid certainly can go quite nuts about that. It makes me wonder just how his father is like in battle.

Next episode, the real story begins!

I love symmetry. It’s the ultimate in asthetics. It’s a lost cause if he thinks he’ll get out of a woman though, since each one has one breast just slightly bigger than the other. He should replace the two of them a robot.

Kid is awesome, just as Soul. But Kid is NO match for his father. You’ll see soon…
Shinigami-sama is… just “WTF?” and Kid is just “Hmm, nice.”.

Now that I think ’bout it, “no match” sounds like they would fight… “is weak in comparison to” fits better. Sorry for my bad english. ^^

Awesome anime! Kid has the same voice as Yagami Raito (Kira) of Death Note :) For those who wants to view it take a look at this site (download): http://www.fansub-bt.com/serie/1106/soul-eater
