Tokyo Marble Chocolate is an interesting OVA. It chronicles the life of a young couple and their love from both of their perspectives each titled Zenryoku Shounen (boy part) and Mata Aimashou (girl part).

I found Tokyo Marble Chocolate to be a really neat romance story that held my interest from beginning to end (for both parts). The characters, Chizuru and Yuudai, are some of the best I’ve seen in recent times. They’re perfect characters because they are imperfect, especially Yuudai who is afraid of heights and apparently dogs (I won’t laugh at the former but the latter…LOL). Chizuru flaws come in the form of her being indecisive and being, I think, self-esteem issues. Both of their past relationships were pretty much filled with hiccups and, to me, were quite hilarious. Yuudai had a girlfriend who kicked the asses of some thugs with extreme prejudice and Chizuru accidentally knocked out one of her former boyfriend’s mother and [drunkenly] beat the hell out of another at a restaurant. That last one was especially hilarious to me because it started out as light hitting, then light slapping, and then full on wailing! Obviously, she’s not someone you want drunk. :P

As the OVA progresses it becomes glaringly obvious that both characters love each other a lot. Yuudai had trouble expressing his love in words to Chizuru while Chizuru felt that she was having an unrequited love but found out otherwise. That strange mini-donkey also has a hand in helping the to of them on a few separate occasions such as the final scenes. I also found the scenes when Yuudai was knocked out and when Chizuru was thinking to herself after he awoke quite beautiful, especially Yuudai’s (it’s also seen in the promo images).

Sure it’s not perfect but that’s hardly what I look for in anything that I watch or read. I would have liked if it was longer, like say an hour for both parts, but the duration was more than satisfying. I would have also liked to see a little glimpse of their lives after the end actually animated instead of in pictures but again that’s not something I’d mark down against this wonderful OVA. The animation was wonderful which was to be expected given that Production I.G. is behind this and the music was just lovely. I really liked the ending themes and must find those singles as soon as possible whenever they’re released, if they aren’t already.

I’m definitely recommending this especially if you like romance stories and adorable couples. When you do watch this I’d recommend starting with the boy part even though there’s no real starting point so either can be viewed first. ^^
