Oh man that was so absolutely entertaining! While I didn’t go into the show with rigid expectations, I knew that I should expect comedy and three adorable girls. Well, I got all of that and more and, dear lord, I couldn’t stop laughing and face-palming at the hilarity.
Zettai Karen Children is something most would initially ignore because of a few things. One, the main characters are all young girls at the age of ten. Two, they might have allusions to the Powerpuff Girls. Lastly, the show airs on Sunday mornings which isn’t exactly well-known as a time for great shows (or at least shows that are not kiddy) to be running. Fortunately, none of those rubbed off on me and I was treated to some absolutely awesome content.
The Children consists of Akashi Kaoru (voiced by Hirano Aya), Sannomiya Shiho (voiced by Tomatsu Haruka), and Nogami Aoi (voiced by Shiraishi Ryoko) who are all Level 7 ESPs. I’m sure that Level 7 is a pretty high ranking since the girls have to wear limiters but I doubt that it is the highest. It’s a random guess but I suppose Level 10 is the highest. Anyway, Kaoru is definitely the tomboy of the group who does reckless things like blowing up things unnecessarly and also loves to read gravure magazines (quite likes the female body). Shiho and Aoi both even out Kaoru’s craziness with their own respective unique personalites. Shiho more or less lets Kaoru do what she wants but Aoi constantly scolds Kaoru for her foolishness or rather for being like a perverted old man. It’s quite fun watching the girls interact, especially around other people.

Their powers are all unique as well and fits well with the team dynamic. Kaoru has telekinesis, Shiho has divination via physical contact, and Aoi has teleportation. You get to see them working together quite well at the end of the episode when they fight the villian. Speaking of the villain, you know something is wrong and funny as hell when their main attack is a huge laserbeam from their crotch that turns people into stone. His name is even hilarious: Muscle Okama (Gay Muscle). Yeah. If you can’t laugh at stuff like that then I don’t know what to say to you. I freaking LOL’d and it was just wonderful to see all the silliness unfold, especially when the girls (specifically Kaoru with the help of Aoi, Shiho, and their new commander) defeat Muscle Okama by throwing a metal shogi piece right into his crotch. OUCH!
So how does Zettai Karen Children stack up in the usual aspects? Well, the animation is pretty damn good. The character designs are some of the best drawn of the season which I’ve always had a thing for because of their retro feel. The movement was great especially during the fighting scenes. The music was pleasing and I enjoyed both the OP and ED. The OP, Over the Future, is pretty catchy and I can already see myself playing it over and over once the single is out. The characters are all enjoyable, especially the girls since they are just absolutely lovely! The plot really has promise and there is already some mysterious guy watching over the girls. I suspect he is an Esper as well and is either a Level 7 or higher. I’m looking forward to the direction the story will go with the setup they have in place so far.
Zettai Karen Children is definitely one of the best first episodes of the season that I have seen and something that I’d love to rewatch immediately. I’m pretty sure every episode is going to be either absolutely hilarious or absolutely awesome. Or both! Either way, I’m definitely watching this and hopefully will be covering it from start to finish.
Kaoru, Aoi, and Shiho. They are ZETTAI KAREN CHILDREN!

Eh, it was okay. I didn’t find it too hilarious, but that could be because I was really trying to comprehend how weird this show is. A guy that shoots lasers from his crotch? Come on!
Yeah, I agree that the animation does seem to have a retro feel to it. I want to take Shiho-chan and Aoi-chan home with me.
Well, it’s only a 13 episode show so I might stick with it.
I thought it was pretty good. It’ll at least keep me entertained until Synergy gets Hayate 2 out again.
The only thing I don’t like so far is Hirano Aya as Kaoru, who is a complete miscast imho(especially when she keeps going in and out of her Haruhi/Konata voices, that might work in Lucky Star 16, but not here).
I also wonder why they casted Kugimiya Rie as a hamster or something like that. Made me go wtf, that’s for sure. :p
Is that a DSP Lite I see there?
They combined them to create the ultimate handheld!
Wow thanks for sharing this article.
