Before writing my final review of Kimi Aru, the first show I have managed to blog in its entirety, I decided to review the show I always compared Kimi Aru to, He is my Master.
I came to He is my Master with somewhat expectations. It was made by GAINAX and they are the minds behind some of my favorite shows: Neon Genesis Evangelion and Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, but more likely, Mahoromatic. Say what you say about that show, but at least it was touching and emotional, especially in its last episode. So GAINAX knew back then how to utilize interesting twist to maid shows, so how come He is My Master is so generic and boring just after the third episode?
Yoshitaka is a spoiled rich-kid who lives in his own mansion after the loss of his wealthy parents. Needed to be taken care of, he decides to hire live-in maids. It just so happens that two runaway girls, Izumi and Mitsuki, happen to go by his giant mansion and decided to take the offer. It seems normal until the two parties realize something important about each other: The sisters find out Yoshitaka is a pervert who is crazy about designing outfits for his fetishes. Moreover, he finds out that the sister have a perverted Alligator who’ll literally hump Izumi whenever he has a chance, seriously?
Let’s start with the first problem of HiMM, the gags. It’s innocent enough in the first two episodes when you see the desperate Yoshitaka chasing the busty Izumi and seeing him every night sketching in his workshop a new uniform design, but after that, it’s a one trick pony. The premise is trite in particular when a third girl, Anna, comes into the scene, and while she falls in love with Yoshitaka at first, she quickly changes her affection to none other than Izumi. There’s also Mitsuki which is the most Moe character I have seen in a while. That cute yet deceptive girl always mess people for her own amusement, in the form of contests to prove who is more superior, allegedly. It’s amusing the first time, but it’s redundant in every sense of the word. In fact, the only likeable character in the show is Izumi, not because of her giant breasts, but because she is the only normal character that’s forced into all those crazy situations with a perverted master, a humping alligator, a teasing sister and a mad father.
The plot shows potential in the first episode when there are slight hints of Yoshitaka and Izumi romance, and the scenes when those two are acting normal are the best the show has to offer, but that doesn’t say much considering that it’s about 10 minutes of a 12-episode show. The moment when Izumi and Mitsuki tell about their reason for running from their home, it starts serious, but ends up as a non-amusing charade.
At least the animation is fluid and great, as expected from GAINAX, even if the art is a little on the sub-par side. There some quality seiyuu who take part in this fiasco like Junko Minagawa (Ryoma in Prince of Tennis and Cornellia in Code Geass) as Yoshitaka. A funny personal note is that at first I thought the voice was of Romi Paku, only to find I was wrong, and then, to my surprise, Romi Paku is there, voicing a boy. I have to say that was my favorite part of the entire show trying to distinguish between the two seiyuu voices. Yes, it’s that sad.
If you are in the mood of burning 12 episode, have weird fetishes you don’t share with people or “complex” stories like in Kimi Aru send you into spiraling confusion, by all means, give He is my Master a go. It has loads, tons of fan-service for you maid-fuku and boob lovers. I want to see you last all the way to episode 12 and enjoying every moment of this show, because it proved me that production values are never enough to make a decent show.

[Final Score: 53/100]

This was actually one series I loved watching, though a bit strange at first, coming from Gainax and all.
I myself thought it was initially Romi. She and Junko have similar voices. And yeah, then his cousin(?) shows up.
