Episode 1: [They Are My Noble Masters]

Kimi ga Aruji de Shituji… They Are My Noble Masters is sure a long title in Japanese so I am going to refer as Kimi Aru, the more common abridged nickname. I have to admit it is very cliche and it has many similar points to both “He Is My Master” and “Hayate no Gotoku!”, but thanks to a great cast of characters and the seiyuu who voice them, we are treated to one of the more refreshing shows in the genre.

Ren and Mihato Uesugi are kids who ran away from they abusive father and they seek out peaceful life in the city. Alas, after countless of attempts, the two realize it’s harder to find a job in this harsh world. It all changes when the two run into Miyu Kuonji, a cute young girl escorted by her electronic companion, the egg-shaped De Niro (please refrain of “Are you talking to me” jokes). While the little miss suffers from anemia, Ren decides to help her and take her to her house. The two brothers realize the house is a giant mention belong to Miyu’s sister, Shinra, who is a very famous conductor and a very attractive girl in the eyes of Ren. Thanks to his sister’s plead, Shinra and the rest of the staff agree to let Ren and Mihato live in as long as they work at the mansion and Butler and Maid respectively. While Ren believes it is going to be easy, he finds out that the many unique personalities that reside in the mansion can drive oneself insane, and thus the story begin.

Pretty simple story as you can tell, and you can see where this going. While I haven’t seen Hayate no Gotoku! yet, I was going to this show with the feeling it’s going to be the same as He Is My Master, without the perverted crocodile. Luckily, the show is unique in a few ways; One, the main character is actually a guy (Ren) whereas the master is a girl (Shinra), which we don’t see too often. Two, it knows the balance between seriousness and comedy, which wasn’t apparent in He Is My Master, at least in the final episodes.

I also love the unique cast of characters voiced by an all-star cast of Seiyuu. One of my favorite Seiyuu, Tomokazu Seki (known as Kenichi from Shijou Saikou no Deshi Kenichi and Domon Kasshu from G-Gudnam) voicing Ren. He does an amazing job of not only portraying a young guy who wishes to be the best butler he can (like many Shounen shows), but has a great comedic talent he showed in Kenichi, no one squeaks better than him.

Others include Shizuka Itou (Lenalee from D. Gray Man) as powerful owner of the mansion Shinra, hitomi as Hato-nee, Ren’s sister, which the deceptive and cute girl that has managed to cram 49 items around her body, mainly her breasts. Yuko Goto of the Mikuru fame (I dare you not know where Mikuru is from!) plays Miyu the intelligent sister of Shinra that has an IQ of 240, Yu Asakawa (Sakaki in Azumanga Daioh) as the quiet and cheerful Natose and one notable mention is to Yosuke Akimoto (Master Asia in G Gundam) as the hilariously awesome head butler, Colonel (Taisa). His scenes with Ren make the show funny even if breasts isn’t the main topic.

If I have some stuff to say that I didn’t really like, is Shinra’s character. She isn’t as arrogant as HiMM’s Yoshitaka, but she is a little condescending to me, with the whole explanation of her name and how godly it is. Although she may seem like a bad person, she does have an affection to everything cute, mainly Miyu, which she likes to rub her face on her. She seems like an interesting character, but not one I want to root after seeing this episode. Shinra also has another sister, Yume, which is the scape goat of the family since no one appears to notice her (and despite the fact she seems to be 2 inches taller than Miyu, she’s younger) besides Natose. One would imply that there is going to be some yuri in the show, and while I don’t mind that too much, I just hope it’s not going to jump the shark too soon.

Overall, despite me trying to nitpick some of the flaws of Kimi Aru, I have to say it’s a funny show that may have potential as long as they flesh the characters out more. Shinra is already a fan-favorite of many and while she is a pretty girl, I am not converting yet until I know more about the master of the mansion. When you have such a strong cast of characters and a wacky premise, it can either go very well or become a disaster. Let’s hope the former is true.

Like I said, I will, the episode was more about Ren than on her anyways.

“with a unique cast of characters”…watch Hayate no Gotoku, and you’ll see they aren’t…
