Darker than BLACK ep. 22

[ Episode 22: The Worn Road is Wet with Tears...(Part 2) ]

LOL. THe start of this episode was absolutely hilarious. While having a monologue, Mao showed some of his best facial expressions and to top it all off he tried to play himself off as a regular cat with a less than enthusiastic “meow”. From there on the episode unfolds as, in my opinion, one of the best of these last episodes. We find out that Amber’s organization is fighting against the Syndicate who plans on wiping Contractors off of the face of the Earth! I knew there was something rotten within the Syndicate for quite some time but I never figured it would be of this proportions. Sadly, November 11 also dies in this episode after taking out his boss and a large number of bodyguards. After Amber told him he was going to die it seems like he was very much prepared for it. Amber predicting the future is very interesting. Is there a limit, I wonder? Does she already know the result of this battle she is fighting already? And how much younger is she going to get?

It was really sad to see November 11 go, since he was one of the more interesting characters. He was like a James Bond type - charismatic, resourceful and efficient. His relationship with Misaki was always exciting to watch and I was hoping for them to end up together in the end. I also wanted him to play a bigger part in the final showdown.

Nevertheless, as Misaki said, “he carried himself with dignity” and that’s the way he died as well. The last scene with the cigarette was really nicely done. In contrast to Gurren Lagann, where characters die in a very heroic way with inspiring speeches, loud explosions and upbeat music, characters here die quietly and subtly. I think both approaches are really good and they differentiate the different nature of the two shows.

It was really sweet of Hei to go into the enemy’s den to save Mao, even though it went totally against the contractors’ logic. I guess that shows contractors are human too. I also liked Huang’s reaction in the end, saying how they are all idiots but Hei is the biggest idiot of all.

This show does a really good job at making you like all of its characters (with a few exceptions). I think the only other show that had managed to do that was Monster.

Yeah, November 11 was one of the best characters in DtB. At least he got to take out a good number of fools before he died though. I also felt for April and July at the end.

I didn’t like how he died. Since this bastard killed Havoc I have been waiting for him to get his ass wiped by HEI and then he just dies like a normal criminal an a street. But Darker than BLACK is great and this episode is no exception.
