Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei ep. 4

[ Episode 4: From Elbow to Knee ]
Welcome Kobuji Abiru and Otonashi Meru. Is despair with you this evening?

This show is completely insane. That means it’s right up my alley! The episode starts with a newly animated opening sequence. What’s different about it you ask? Well, it has a ton of messages dealing with BDSM and pregnancy. Yup. Complete with an obviously knocked up Kafuka and a depiction of some “white worms” swimming towards the sun ^^;. Anyways, this episode deals with Abiru and Meru. Abiru is a girl with a large number of bandages on her and it was suspected that she was a victim of DV (domestic violence). Of course this was proven false after some hilarious attempts from Itoshiki to interrupt her father’s shopping of items (which he believed he was going to abuse her with). DV is quite a reality in almost every corner of the world so I doubt that was lost to anyone who watches this show. They way it was presented was just too funny not to laugh at. Abiru also has a strange fetish of collecting animal tails, pulling them, and making others (well, maybe just Itoshiki) wear them. That’s one interesting fetish lol.

Meru is up next and she is so adorable. At least on the outside. Her character represents those on the Internet known as “Anonymous”. In real life she suffers from being unable to speak publicly but yet speak freely over the Internet or through text messaging. When she does begin to speak she becomes quite an insulting person. I didn’t expect her to have an entire shirt filled with batteries for her phone though. That was a major “What the hell?!” right there. Kafuka was her usual funny self but was much more so in this episode. I loved the scene were she told Meru to look into her eyes to see what she was thinking only to see red with the words “KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL” spread across her vision. Then there’s the final scene where everyone is on the roof dancing around in a circle. That was no doubt a shoot at religion (most likely something to do with something new age or probably witchcraft/Wicca) and I couldn’t stop laughing even as the ED popped up.

There were also yet again a ton of references to behold. From what I can remember they include: Ichigo 100%, Negima (no surprise there), Pokemon, Gurren Lagann, One Piece, Psychometrer Eiji, Rambo, and I’m reasonably sure Kafuka’s mother being possessed by a demon was a reference to The Exorcist. The Final Fantasy references were freaking golden. I’m quite the rabid fan for the series and so I laughed especially hard at all the FF references to the very end.
This show is definitely the best ones out there right now and my absolute favorite of the new season! ^__^
