Gurren-Lagann ep. 17

[ Episode 17: You Don't Understand Anything]

Seven years has passed…what awaits the newly revitalized human civilization now that Simon is Supreme Commander?

New OP Sequence

The new opening sequence is spoilerific to the maximum. I’m glad that the song isn’t different but rather they used a different verse of Sorairo Days. There’s some pretty interesting stuff in there. Such as showing that Nia and Dark Nia are two separate entities, Kamina with a flame on his back, Gurren-Lagann with three different forms, a HUGE, earth-sized mecha, and GARlock Simon. Awesomeness.

This episode was just incredible. Just when you think GAINAX can’t do any better than the last episode (in this case episode 15) they hit you with another that sweeps you off of your feet. Almost everything feels refreshed and brand new. Seeing the characters maturity over seven years time was a treat. Simon, now the supreme commander of the new government has come a long ways in appearance and confidence. He has even more of a leader aura than ever before and I think it’ll only grow more when he goes GARlock. Nia surprised me big time. She has matured a lot in body and in mind (though still a bit slow on things like Simon’s proposal xD) but her new role took my breath away. Aside from the OP spoiling it a bit, I didn’t expect her to be apart of the Anti-Spiral tribe that wants to destroy the human race. I suppose we’ll get more information on why she [unwillingly] became the face of evil in the next few episodes.

Everyone else has come quite a ways as well. Rossiu is one of the main people who have changed greatly. In summary he’s basically become the resident jackass and/or asshole of the series. I suppose you can call him a sort of antagonist towards Simon’s way of doing things at the moment. Not only does he seem to like to undermine Simon but he has his own secret projects such as reviving the Helix King. He’s supposed to be doing that so he can learn the secrets of the world and the real reason behind his [the Helix King's] words seven years ago. Well, the latter is pretty obvious now that the population has reached 1 million. I wonder how the Anti-Spiral tribe even knows when a new human is born…

Anyways, Simon and Rossiu will most likely come to conflict in the next episode or two and it should be interesting to see. Yoko has yet to return since she left some time during the seven-year time skip. Hopefully she comes back in time to kick some ass along side of Simon. The same goes for Viral who is know an anti-hero type of character. I have a feeling he’ll join up with Simon in the future.

Oh yes! I can’t forget about Darry. I think she’s the character that impressed me the most in this episode. She’s grown to be a rather beautiful girl and is quite skilled at piloting at such a young age. I’m not sure how much she’ll be used plot-wise but I really want to see more of her. In any case, Gurren Lagann continues to impress me greatly and stays constantly as one of my favorite shows of the season (and the year). Here’s to eagerly awaiting the next episode!

New ED Sequence

The new ED is pretty catchy. I find it to be much better than the first one.
