[ Episode 1: The Kids with Glasses ]

Earlier in the season I saw a show named Dennou Coil and decided that I’ll look out for it since it looked pretty good art-wise and had an interesting name. I then further searched for information on the series and found that it was not really being hyped per se but found a lot of people that I consider to have a good head on their shoulders were eagerly anticipating the debut of this series. I’m glad that I joined them in their anticipation and I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the content of the first episode after expecting something out of the ordinary.

I honestly don’t know where to begin. There were so many things packed into this episode that it’s ridiculously awesome. Well, first I guess I should start with the technology present in Dennou Coil. Virtual reality has apparently meshed almost seamlessly into the real world of Dennou Coil. There are things like cyberpets and “spaces” that appear to be common aspects of their world. As such, every kid including our main character Yuuko wear glasses. Now these aren’t ordinary glasses but ones that I’m sure everyone would be running to their nearest electronics store to purchase of they were real. They act as visors that enable the wearer to see things like cyberpets and viruses, function as a telephone and also as a GPS. Pretty damn convenient if you ask me.

There are things floating around Yuuko’s new neighbourhood that are described as UFOs. These things so far are shown to be sphere devices that go around repairing spaces and eliminating viruses. I have no idea what else they do but they also seem to attack people for some reason or another. There’s also another digital entity called “Sacchi” that appears at the end of the episode but it’s unclear as to what it is exactly but I’m guessing it isn’t similar to the UFOs or at least has higher functions than they do.

Aside from Yuuko, her younger sister Kyoko, and Yuuko’s dog Densuke, we’re introduced to two other characters in this episode: Fumie and Daichi. Those two are shown to be rivals in the work that they do and are apart of the Coil Cyber Investigation Agency. So far, we’ve been told that the purpose of this agency is to search for missing pets. I’m not sure if that’s the extent of their goals as yet but I’m guessing we’ll find out more about it as the next episode is titled after the very same agency.

The artwork is rather simple yet bright, smooth, and attractive. I feel that it suits the atmosphere that has been introduced so far and definitely allows for flexibility of any weird or strange creatures or devices in the future. The music heard so far was very accommodating to the backgrounds of the episode and especially so during certain situations such as when Yuuko and Fumie were escaping from one of the UFOs that found them.

This show, in my opinion, is a must-watch despite it premiering so late in the season. It has some decent amount of originality that I feel is a breath of fresh air for the spring season and really shouldn’t be missed. I’m certain that I haven’t gone into extreme detail about everything I thought and felt while watching the episode but I suppose that is because I think that it is best for you, the readers, to experience Dennou Coil for yourselves. Mitsuo Iso, the creator of this little gem, has some impressive ideas of originality and I can’t wait to see more of his work in future episodes to come. ^__^

I watched this first episode because of your high praise towards it, and I must say, it truly is a must-see for this season :)

and The beginning of the episode reminded me of Miyazaki’s Totoro. Which is a good thing.
