Darker than BLACK ep. 2

[Episode 2: The Star of Contract Flowed… (2nd Volume)]

[Enjoyment Value: 9/10]

“Contractors are liars and traitors.”

[Thoughts]

This episode was much better than the first. I liked the pace of action much better and liked that we got to see more of Hei in action. Though I’m not exactly sure what his powers are yet it seems to be something similar to electrocution. As for the cost of his contract, it seems that he has to eat massive amounts of food given the amount he ordered when he was with Chiaki. That and he also cooks quite a bit.

I’m also liking this bi-episode approach they’re taking with Darker than BLACK. Though I usually prefer a more continuous approach to storytelling I have no problems with Darker than BLACK using it as I think it fits the overall atmosphere of the show for now. However, that also means that most characters introduced will probably be killed within those two episodes or just plain not seen ever again. Like with Chiaki, I had gotten a used to her a little but man was I shocked when I found out that the real Chiaki was already dead and that the one Hei was with was just a Doll. Though it was sad I applauded how well-done it was executed and managed to not really give a “WTF” feeling but more like something that caused you to sit back and go “Wow…”.

Lastly, I’m glad to hear Mai Yamane again! My memory is bad at the moment but I don’t think I’ve heard anything from her since Cowboy Bebop some years ago and the last time I watched Macross Plus. It’s good to see that she and Yoko Kanno are back working together and I can’t wait to hear some more songs with her as the one at the end of the episode sounded really good.

^__^ I really enjoyed this episode. I agree that the episodic nature is fine for this show.
