[Thoughts]
The first episode of Gigantic Formula is nothing short of amazing. As a mecha fan, I just had to watch this out of curiosity and man was I surprised. It was so good that I can’t even find all of the words to gauge my impressions properly but I’ll try of course.
Firstly, the designs. Both character designs and the mecha designs are excellently done. Particularly the mecha designs as this show is packing some of the most legendary mecha designers that has ever graced the industry. There are some interesting ones that I managed to catch a glimpse of during the episode that look very good and I particularly like Susano’s design and the Chinese Gigantic was good-looking as well.
Surprisingly I already like the main characters introduced so far too. Shingo is a nice deviation from the regular angry and tough main character who just suddenly jumps up and pilots a mecha with no previous experience. He’s got some good shoulders on him too and wasn’t as scared as I thought he’d be during the chaos. I’m interested in exactly how he became this “Chosen One” they’re calling him though. The girl who pilots along side of him, Mana, is pretty cute and I think they’ll grow closer in the future. I want to see more of her as well because it seems as if she can jump very far and very high with ease. o_O
The music was very good and the ED I felt fit the aura/atmosphere this series gives off. I’m looking forward to the OP in the next episode since a favorite of mine, Kuribayashi Minami, is singing it. While Gigantic Formula doesn’t exactly bring anything new to the genre, I’m still very impressed with this first episode and this is definitely one of my favorite (pure) mecha series of the season so far. I eagerly await the next episode.
