[Summary]

After leaving school and beginning summer vacation, a group of 15 children find themselves on the beach. After some idle play a young girl in the group, Yoko Machi, suggests that the group go and explore one of the nearby caves on the beach. Once they enter they begin to explore their surroundings only finding themselves going deeper and deeper into the cave than they had originally planned. They eventually come across a room with all sorts of electronic equipment inside but before they can touch anything a strange man appears behind them. After some idle chat the man asks them if they would like to play a game. He explains that the game involves them controlling a giant robot and using it to protect the Earth from fifteen enemies. After discussing it among themselves, they decide to join in his game and seal the deal by touching an odd object. The only one not to touch the odd plate is smallest of the group, a little girl named Kanna. After they’re done the man introduces himself as Kokopelli and explains to them a few more things the game will begin and that he’ll defeat the first enemy. He then says goodbye before everything goes black.

Later that evening, the children all awaken on the beach and think that what they experienced before was all a dream. They all decide to return to the place that they’re staying but encounter a giant robot on the way. Worried, they begin to wonder where the enemy is and almost immediately they witness a multi-legged giant land in the sea. They immediately find themselves in a strange room and met the strange man earlier. As he takes control and begins to fight the enemy, he explains to the children that each enemy has a vital spot but that they’re located in various places. He then demonstrates how they must kill the enemies by finding the vital spot of the current one and subsequently crushing it. After the battle, Kokopelli is about to say something but the children are transported out of the giant robot before he could finish. They all stand around the beach and witness the giant robot disappear while Komoda is thinking that Kokopelli was trying to apologize to them.

[Thoughts]

I was very impressed with this first episode! One of the things that I was anticipating was the music and I’m glad to say that I wasn’t disappointed in the least. The OP and ED are especially well done though I favor the OP as I was quite addicted to Uninstall a few weeks ago when the PV was first released. Ishikawa Chiaki does an excellent job with the vocals for both.

A few things I noticed that were changed is that they didn’t include the appearance of Dung Beetle. He’s hilarious in his own way. However, it’s not that much of a concern as he’ll be in the next episode. They also left out the air force jets that came to investigate the battle going on between the Zearth (the robot) and the enemy.

I very much liked the appearance of the seats in Zearth as they match the number of children present. We don’t get an explanation on them in this episode though. As for where the chairs come from:

As for the characters themselves, I think GONZO did a wonderful job bring their personalities to life in animated form by choosing a great cast of seiyuu. I can’t wait for more episodes so that I can see, hear, and feel the character reactions to the various horrifying events that are to come.

Mohiro Kitoh is a genius for creating such a great manga and I can’t wait to see how Gonzo implemented the anime!
