[Summary]

In an underground village lives a boy named Simon who digs holes. One day while digging he discovers a tiny drill. Simon then bumps into Kamina, a guy who insists on calling himself Simon’s soul brother. He tells him how his newfound drill will take him to higher points in life and goes on about his goal to leave their confined village. After an earthquake hits, Kamina (as well as Simon who tried to get him into a hole) stays outside while the other villagers scurry into their holes. As a result, he’s arrested.

Later, Simon digs once more and comes across a face that glows in unison with his drill. He quickly goes to free Kamina so that he can show him his discovering but amidst it all a giant suddenly crashes down from the ceiling and starts wrecking the village. Before anyone could face it, a mysterious girl appears suddenly and blasts the giant’s head. Simon then digs them an escape route and while en route his drill begins to pulsate. He uses he drill and it acts as a key to activate the giant head he discovered. It suddenly sproutes arms and legs but the three get sent flying into a large area where they encounter the giant that was wrecking the village earlier, which the girl identifies as a Ganmen.

Simon quickly comes to save Kamina and the girl using the mecha that was named Lagaan by Kamina earlier. Even after knocking the Ganmen down it gets back up and attacks. Realizing that he needs more power, Simon uses his drill and after a few transformations they successfully destroy the Ganmen and are sent flying to the surface of the planet. After enjoying a beautiful view, the girl introduces herself as Yoko. However, they’re not out of trouble yet as they’re falling to the surface while in the Lagaan. Simon finds himself on top of Yoko who he thinks is going to freak out but she doesn’t. Instead she hugs him closer to her chest after a fearful look spreads on her face after two more giant mecha appear in front of them.

[Thoughts]

This series is quite action-packed and adrenaline infused. That is a very good thing in my opinion. Somehow I feel as if I’ve been waiting on a series like this for quite some time. Something that has a somewhat serious storyline but knows when to have fun with itself without breaking the overall flow of the episode.

I have to say that I love the opening song. It’s very catchy and fast-paced and suits the series perfectly. I can’t say much about the ED though since it only lasts about 30 seconds in this episode but it does sound decent.

That said I had a lot of fun watching this first episode and the main characters are all likable. Simon is a decent main lead and Kamina is just too freaking awesome not to like given his personality. My personal favorite among the three though is Yoko. Her design is the best so far (no, not solely because she has big breasts) and Inoue Maria (who is quite busy this season) does such a wonderful job with her voice. The mecha designs are very weird but I still like them as it makes me wonder what kind of other mecha designs we’ll see in future episodes. Consider this baby apart of my regular blogging schedule.
