Impressions:
Now this is what I call an anime. From the first episode alone it has already seduced its way into my top three favorites of the season. This thing has godly amounts of content. Awesome action scenes, outstanding animation quality (OVA level anyone?), and a cast of characters that doesn’t fail to impress. Suffice to say, the animation and production teams knew what they were doing when they decided to go full quality from the beginning. I just hope that the animation quality and everything else stays consistent through the entire series (I think it’s 26 episodes long? I’ll check later to be sure). Aside from those concerns I’m going to have to watch this one a few more times just because I can just to see those kickass action scenes again and to smile at all the characters introduced (rest assured I’ve already picked out my favorites which I will mention later).

I loved the way the episode opened. Quick perspective changes with the support of an excellent background score that I can’t wait to listen to whenever the OST comes out. Also, this anime deals with some seriously heavy undertones. There were scenes of people beating the hell out of others (they didn’t seem to be zombies or “Returned Dead”) and they even showed a girl crying on the sidewalk with her panties pulled down on one leg (yeah, you can pretty much guess what happened to her…).

As for the characters. they’re damn great. Tatsuma and Kyouichi are hilarious and yet dangerous when together. Maria is the hot sensei that no one dares to mess with (not even the dynamic duo to an extent). Komaki is the bitchy, yet hotter than hell archery girl who one shouldn’t ever mess with in a long distance battle. Aoi is the ever happy-go-lucky student council president which psychic abilities. Yuuya is the strong man of the group who turns into a big softie in front of Komaki. Also, there’s a little girl (her name is Claire) who goes from adorably cute to a certified Higurashi-mode in less than second. Oh and I can’t forget the meganekko report, Toono. There are some other characters but none of them are important to me at the moment. Anyways, overall together they make a great cast. I also love the character designs, especially for the females (especially Maria and Komaki).

Condensed Summary:
The episode starts with some scenes of the past showing one of the main characters as a child (I assume that it’s Tatsuma). We’re then whisked seventeen years into the future and are shown scenes of mindless killing and a girl who is running from what appear to be zombies. She is eventually caught and found later that morning. Some researchers get their hands on her body and mention that all the moistness in her body is gone. Then, we’re introduced to the protagonists of the story who at school. There are some scenes with the main leads, Tatsuma and Kyouichi, beating up some other students that came to challenge them.
Fast forward to more zombie asskicking, we’re shown scenes of a wayward monk named Yang and his subordinates fighting and eventually getting carried away by zombies or what they call “Returned Dead”. Back with our protagonists they discuss what’s been going on for the past two weeks. Later, the girl from the beginning shows up as a “Returned Dead” in front of her former boyfriend but he is saved by Komaki. From here the action is turned to maximum as Aoi gets to display her abilities (psycho-kinesis it seems), who along with Yuuya saves Toono (the meganekko reporter) from nearly becoming a “Returned Dead”. The parasitic zombie is eventually confronted by Tatsuma and Kyouichi who proceed to beat it to death (by the way, the musical score played during the last battle was great).

Having watched this episode myself, I also found found this first episode to be good. If I were you I wouldn’t get carried way by the high quality of aniamtion of this episode, as most first episode’s tend to conatin animation that is greater than the episodes that fwllow this. I for one wouldn’t be surprised if the aniamtion dropped a level in the next episode, though I hope it remains consistant.
I to enjoy this show, after watching this episode. I betting the animation will drop in quality in the next episode, though I hoping that the aniamtion will be concistant throughout the series. The character designs was the thing to me, that drew me towards watchign this show.
Woot! I saw this yesterday and the style seemed a bit weird to me at first, but I quickly adjusted
. And O.o I think that Komaki looks kind of like Rukia, and they’re both tomboyish. I agree with you on the animation, its fluid and the fight scenes look nice. Oh yeah this is the first time I’ve been on your blog, nice job on it. I like your opinions too lol.
P.S. I like Aoi better than Komaki o.O
Tatsuma forever~!
Gomen, gomen, my comment cut off >__>. Well, I did just had to fangirl first xD I got very carried away with how awesome this episode was, too. So much so I think I got BLEACH and NARUTO fans ready to throw rocks at me xD Hopefully the quality on all aspects will continue and I won’t feel so bad xDD
The animation kind of reminds me of Blood hehe.
Aoi is my new love! xD
And er…this show became my favourite of this season like 1 minute into the first episode…and no the quality doesnt deteriorate by episode 2…
Danny: rofl. My top two favorites would be Komaki and Maria.
When does the OST for this come out?
I haven’t a clue. I’m guessing some time during the second season or after it. :/
Tatsuma is one of the coolest protagonists ever, especially with his hood up and chewing on those little nuts
That coupled with the story and music has really lured me into this anime
